PlanTorres - Boost Lectura

This was a small redesign and accessibility QA I did for an English game our Spanish team was trying to repurpose. We wanted to create a second game but it needed to accommodate more content which caused a lot of design and technical obstacles. This redesign was completed in a two week sprint.

Original

Goals:

Originally, we set out to give this game a simple face lift. After working with content specialists, we realized we could utilize this UI redesign as a way to integrate more difficult lessons, making the game useful for more grade levels.

  • Redesign letter tiles to fit more letters

  • Design an updated drag and drop mechanism to improve accessibility

  • Create a new game concept that was enjoyable but also cohesive with the original

New version

Obstacles:

Limited screen space

  • I needed to fit up to 18 letters on the board (the largest word in the original was 8 letters)

  • I needed to resize all the elements to fit larger tiles and make sure they still read as dragable tiles for our younger grades

Obstacles:

Accessibility, Time

  • I shared the new drag and drop design with stakeholders and we agreed that updating the game to be more accessible was worth spending a little more time on it. I was able to update the keyboard navigation as well.

  • Since this game was the successor of the original, we needed to update the original game with the new accessibility redesign

Design Brainstorm

We had a short time frame to decide on a new story concept and the new game rewards

  • Since the UI moves vertically as the game progresses, we needed to come up with a concept that told a story through one background

  • We also needed to create game rewards that fit the narrative of the game and could be repeated through different colors because of our time crunch

  • Some ideas were: Around the world, rainforest, and a microcosm. Ultimately the stakeholders decided to go with the microcosm idea

Final UI Designs

Finally, I created the game rewards and design specs. I worked with developers to ensure the accessibility updates on both games were done

  • The game rewards had to be simple and reuseable

  • I also created the progress screens and other assets that fit both the English and Spanish game

  • I worked with a new developer to figure out how the backend now would accommodate the new game tiles and asset sizes
